An Historic Experience

Visit the various battle grounds on which the English and the Spanish fought for the beatiful island of Jamaica and immerse yourself in what makes us who we are today.

Seville Great House and Heritage Park

The Great House was built in 1745 on the site of the original Great House by the grandson of Richard Hemmings, the first English owner of the property. Over the years many changes have been made to the original structure. When the last owner died he arranged for the property to be given to the Government of Jamaica. It is now a museum owned by the Jamaica National Trust Commission. It explores the rich history of the Seville site.

Seville Great house is symbolic of the English period. After the capture of the island in 1655, New Seville was abandoned by the Spaniards. Edward Long tells us, the English divided up and allotted the land to victorious officers and other soldiers. In this allotment, the city of New Seville became the property of one Captain Hemmings, an officer of the army, thus becoming Seville Estate. 1745, Hemmings’ grandson built the great house on the site of the original house which was built at the end of the seventeenth cen

Green Grotto Caves

Known at various times as the Runaway Bay Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Hopewell Caves, Rum Caves and Dairy Caves, are among Jamaica’s most prominent natural attractions. They are of international repute and have been seeing visitors since the 18th century.

Situated on 25.9 hectares of the island’s beautiful North Coast, the Caves are located between the resort centres of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay and are precisely 3.2 km from Discovery Bay to the west and 4 km from Runaway Bay to the east.

The central feature of this natural attraction is the large labyrinthine limestone cave with its numerous rock formations, its stalactites, stalagmites and abundance of overhead ceiling pockets.

Battle Site

Rio Nuevo St. Mary is the site of the final pitched battle between British and Spanish forces to determine possession of Jamaica. The Spanish defeat following five years of guerrilla warfare led by Spanish Governor Arnaldo de Isassi placed Jamaica definitively in English hands. Spain formally conceded Jamaica to England by the Treaty of Madrid in 1670.

Harmony Hall

Located in Tower Isle St. Mary, just 5 Miles out of Ocho Rios, Built in the nineteenth century of stone and daub, it once housed a Methodist manse, but was closed for a period of time. It is now operated by Annabella and Peter Proudlock. Harmony Hall Jamaica is an Art lovers’ playground, they feature various exhibits from the likes of George Galitzine and Deryck Campbell.

Not only is there a lot of art, but also freshly served cuisine from Toscanini a five star Italian Restaurant. Harmony hall creates an atmosphere of old and new Jamaica, with its breath taking tropics, you would not want to miss out on this one.
