Warm Welcome to Jamaica Trip Advisor has proven to be a fantastic resource when travelling to new places. We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the great experiences we’ve had so many times based upon the resources we found on TripAdvisor, it shouldn’t surprise us anymore. Consistent with our previous experiences based upon TripAdvisor review, our fantastic experience with Richie Brooks impressed us, as well. I chose Richie because of the consistent positive reviews. That he is a punctual, professional, trustworthy, and engaging host. I can confirm that all of this is true. We arrived in Falmouth on the Oasis of the Seas. Richie was waiting for us in the area for private tour providers. I recognized him based upon the pictures I’d seen on TripAdvisor. He greeted us warmly. We hopped into his van and we were off! The first thing you notice after spending only a few minutes with Richie is how personable he is and what a great sense of humor he has. My husband and I were smiling and laughing almost immediately. The second thing we noticed during our time with Richie is that EVERYONE knows Richie (in a good way). We opted to go with a private tour with Richie in lieu of the excursions offered from the ship to avoid being herded with the masses in buses. Our goal was to get a less touristy taste of Jamaica. The first place we stopped off was the historic Seville house. The house was a working plantation that is now managed by the Jamaican national trust. During our tour we learned the history of Jamaica from the Taino Indians, Spanish, and British influence. We toured the grounds to see the preserved areas of the old plantation and also the old slave’s kitchen garden that is still maintained. From there, Richie drove us through the town of Ocho Rios. Prior to our arrival, I thought that it was a much larger town. However it is really a small local town that is built around tourism. There are many shopping opportunities all through town. My husband and I aren’t big into shopping, but if that is your thing, there are ample amounts of artisan’s wares to choose from. Our next stop was Fern Gully. Richie drove us through the “locals” area where it was nice to see the local school children going about their day from school. The area gets its name from the wide variety of ferns which grow in the area, towering high above the road forming a shady tunnel of lush greenery. Vendors line the road, selling wooden carvings and sculptures Next, we stopped off at a great Ocho Rios lookout spot for a refreshing beverage, whose name I can’t remember, but was in a beautiful area just below Mick Jagger’s house. After our refreshing beverage, Richie took us to our favorite spot Coyaba Gardens. We participated in a brief tour of the gardens, but we could have wandered around all afternoon. There is a great variety of flora and fauna, some of which is labeled. The views and photo opportunities are truly breathtaking. We followed our garden tour with Dunn’s River Falls. Yes, this is THE tourist spot for the area. It was swimming with tourists and people who were more than happy to sell to them. The husband and I neglected to bring our swim suit, but Richie still made the visit worthwhile. He followed us into the park and walked with us through each area of the falls, taking pictures of us along the way. You would never know that we didn’t actually climb the falls(yes, we cheated!) from all the great pictures Richie generously took of us. The perfect ending to day was our stop at Scotchies. This is someplace I felt you would see on Anthony Bourdain as an “authentic” place that the locals go to. I’d read about it before we arrived but am sooooo…glad we enjoyed a meal there. The jerk chicken with all the trimmings was fantastic. My husband and I are still talking about how great our meal was. If you are still reading, thanks for hanging in there! 🙂 In summary, count yourself lucky if you are able to book time with Richie. A tour experience with him is truly a treat!
